You go to bed fine and wake up with a stiff, sore neck — that dull ache or the can't-turn-my-head-to-one-side feeling. If it's happening most mornings, your body is telling you something specific: your neck spent the night bent out of line, and the most common reason is your pillow. Here's how to figure out which pillow problem you actually have, because there are three, and they need different fixes.
The one thing your neck needs all night
Your neck wants to stay neutral while you sleep — the same straight line from your skull down your spine that you'd have standing up with good posture. A pillow's entire job is to fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck keeps that line.
When you wake up stiff, that line got broken. Your head was tilted up, dropped down, or cranked sideways for hours, and the muscles and joints in your neck held that bad angle all night. Now figure out which of these three things did it.

Problem 1: Your pillow is the wrong height (most common)
This is the big one. If your pillow is too tall, it shoves your head up and kinks your neck forward. Too flat, and your head drops back or sags toward the mattress. Either way your neck is bent for hours.
The tell: You wake stiff and the stiffness is general, across the back or side of the neck. The fix is loft — the height the pillow holds your head — matched to how you sleep:
- Side sleeper → you need a tall, supportive pillow to fill the wide gap between your head and shoulder. Side sleepers on flat pillows are the #1 stiff-neck case.
- Back sleeper → a medium pillow that cradles the neck curve without pushing your chin to your chest.
- Stomach sleeper → a very thin or no pillow, because anything tall cranks your head back.
If your height doesn't match your position, that's almost certainly your answer.
Problem 2: Your pillow is worn out and gone flat
Pillows die. Over a year or two they compress, lose their loft, and stop springing back — so a pillow that was the right height when you bought it is now a flat pancake that lets your head sag all night. People keep pillows for years and blame their mattress.
The tell: Fold your pillow in half and let go. If it stays folded instead of springing back open, it's done. A dead pillow can't support your neck no matter how good it was originally. Replace it.
Problem 3: It's not the pillow — it's the position
Sometimes the pillow is fine and the issue is how you sleep. Sleeping on your stomach forces your head turned to one side all night, which torques the neck no matter what pillow you use. If you're a stomach sleeper waking with one-sided neck pain, the pillow can only do damage control — the real fix is slowly retraining toward your side or back (a body pillow to hug helps).
The tell: The stiffness is one-sided, and you know you sleep face-down.
Quick diagnosis
| What you notice | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| General stiffness, every morning | Wrong pillow height | Match loft to your sleep position |
| Pillow looks flat / won't spring back | Worn-out pillow | Replace it |
| One-sided pain, you sleep on your stomach | Position, not pillow | Retrain toward side/back; thin pillow |
| Wake up hot AND stiff | Heat-trapping foam + wrong loft | Cooling pillow at the right loft |
The fix, in order
1. Check your pillow's age. Flat and won't spring back? Replace it — don't bother diagnosing further. 2. Match the loft to your position. Side = tall, back = medium, stomach = thin. This solves most stiff necks on its own. 3. If you run hot too, pick a cooling build at the right loft so you're not flipping it all night (heat wakes you, then you sleep in worse positions). 4. If you sleep on your stomach, start nudging toward your side — the pillow can't fully fix a position problem.
One honest note: a stiff neck from your pillow should ease within a week or two of fixing the loft. If your neck pain is severe, persistent, radiates into your arm, or comes with numbness or tingling, that's a professional's call, not a pillow's.
Find the right loft for how you sleep
We build pillows across the loft range — tall and supportive for side sleepers, medium for back, with a cooling option if you run hot — so you can match your neck instead of forcing it to adapt to the wrong height.

Shop pillows by sleep position →Most stiff necks are a height problem, not a you problem. Fix the loft and the mornings usually fix themselves.
Comfort and positioning vary by person. Adjustable positioning is not a treatment for any medical condition; for persistent pain, reflux, or sleep issues, talk to your doctor.
