The Best Mattress for Side Sleepers With Hip and Shoulder Pain

The Best Mattress for Side Sleepers With Hip and Shoulder Pain
The Copper Hybrid cradles the shoulder and hip while keeping the spine aligned.

If you sleep on your side and wake up with an aching hip or a sore shoulder — usually on whichever side you slept on — your mattress is almost certainly the culprit. The good news is it's a fixable, specific problem, and once you understand why side sleeping causes that ache, picking the right mattress takes about a minute.

Why side sleepers get hip and shoulder pain

When you lie on your side, your whole body weight funnels onto two narrow points: your shoulder and your hip. On your back, your weight spreads across your whole frame. On your side, it stacks onto those two joints.

Now two things can go wrong:

  • The mattress is too firm. It won't let your shoulder and hip sink in, so those joints get crushed against a hard surface all night. That's the pressure-point ache — you wake up sore exactly where you were pressing down.
  • The mattress is too soft or unsupportive. Your hip sinks in too far, your spine sags into a banana shape, and now your lower back hurts too.

So a side sleeper needs a mattress that does two opposite-sounding things at once: let the shoulder and hip sink in (pressure relief) while keeping the spine straight (support). Most mattresses do one or the other. The right one does both.

What to look for (the side-sleeper checklist)

1. A contouring comfort layer on top. You want a top layer — memory foam or a soft comfort layer — thick enough that your shoulder and hip press into the mattress instead of against it. This is what kills the pressure-point pain. A thin or rock-hard top layer is the #1 reason side sleepers wake up sore.

2. Supportive coils underneath — ideally pocketed. Under that soft top you want individually pocketed coils that push back where you need it (under your waist and lower back) while still letting the heavier hip and shoulder zones sink. Pocketed coils respond zone by zone, so they hold your spine straight without fighting your joints. This is why a hybrid — soft contouring layers over pocketed coils — is usually the sweet spot for side sleepers.

3. Medium to medium-soft firmness. On a 1–10 firmness scale, most side sleepers land around a 5–6. Firm enough to support the spine, soft enough to cushion the joints. Heavier side sleepers can go slightly firmer; lighter folks slightly softer.

4. Pressure relief that doesn't cook you. A lot of pressure-relieving foam traps heat. If you run warm, look for a hybrid with a cooling cover or copper/gel-infused comfort layer so you get the cushion without the heat.

A quick comparison

Mattress type For a side sleeper with hip/shoulder pain
Firm innerspring ❌ Crushes the shoulder and hip — worst case
All-foam, very soft ⚠️ Cushions joints but spine sags → back pain
Hybrid, medium-soft, pocketed coils ✅ Cushions joints and holds the spine straight

The pattern is clear: a side sleeper with joint pain wants a medium-soft hybrid. Soft on top, supportive underneath.

How to know it's working

Give a new mattress a couple of weeks (your body needs to adjust), then check: are you waking up without the hip or shoulder ache you used to have? Is your lower back neutral, not sagging? If you can lie on your side and feel your spine is straight — head, neck, and back in one line — the mattress is doing its job.

And one honest note: a mattress is a comfort and pressure-relief tool, not a medical treatment. If your hip or shoulder pain is severe, persistent, or comes from a known joint issue, the right mattress will make sleeping more comfortable — but see a professional for the underlying problem.
