Shopping for an adjustable bed gets overwhelming fast. Every brand lists a dozen "features," half of them sound the same, and you can't tell which ones matter and which are filler designed to justify the price. So here's the shortcut: there are really only six things to check before you buy. Nail these and you'll get a bed you're happy with. Everything else is a bonus or a distraction.
They're in order of importance.
1. Does it raise the head AND the feet independently?
This is the first thing to check and the one cheap bases cut. A lot of budget "adjustable" bases only raise the head. But for back pain, circulation, and the zero-gravity position, you need the feet to raise too — independently from the head. If a base only does the head, it can't do half of what people buy an adjustable bed for. Confirm both move, separately, before anything else.

2. What's the weight rating?
Add up your weight, your partner's, and a margin for the mattress and bedding. The base's weight rating should sit comfortably above that total. This isn't just about not breaking it — a base running near its limit gets louder, slower, and wears out faster. A base with headroom on the rating runs quieter and lasts longer. Check the number; don't assume.
3. Will it work with a mattress (yours or a new one)?
The base sets the angle; the mattress decides whether the bed actually bends. You need a mattress that flexes — foam, latex, or a pocketed-coil hybrid, roughly 6–12 inches thick. An old rigid innerspring or a 14"+ slab won't bend cleanly. Decide now: are you keeping your current mattress (does it flex?) or buying a matched one? Buying the base and then discovering your mattress won't work is the most common regret.
4. How quiet and controllable are the motors?
You'll adjust this bed in the dark, possibly next to a sleeping partner. Look for quiet motors and a remote that lets you find your exact angle and hold it — ideally with memory presets so you can save your favorite positions instead of re-finding them every night. Crude three-button bases that only jump between fixed positions get old fast.
5. What's the trial and warranty?
This is your safety net, and it's worth real money. Two things:
- A home trial (90 nights is the standard to want) — because you genuinely can't tell from a showroom how you'll feel sleeping at an angle for a full night. The trial is how you find out with a return on the table.
- A real warranty on the motor and frame — an adjustable base has moving parts a box spring doesn't, so the warranty is your insurance on the one thing that can wear out.
A cheaper base with no trial and no warranty isn't actually cheaper if it's wrong or it fails.
6. Are you paying a fair price — or a showroom markup?
Last, check the price against what the bed actually is, not against the first quote you got. The same class of adjustable base can cost double at a furniture store, because you're paying for the showroom, the chain of middlemen, and the salesperson's commission on top of the base itself. Factory-direct pricing strips that out. Before you buy, ask: am I paying for the bed, or for the building I'm standing in?
The checklist, on one screen
| Check | What you want |
|---|---|
| 1. Adjustment | Head and feet, independently |
| 2. Weight rating | Comfortably above you + partner + mattress |
| 3. Mattress | Flexes (foam/latex/pocketed hybrid, 6–12") — yours or new |
| 4. Motors | Quiet, fine control, memory presets |
| 5. Safety net | 90-night trial + real warranty |
| 6. Price | Fair (factory-direct), not a showroom markup |
What's NOT on this list, on purpose: massage, under-bed lighting, USB ports, app control. They're nice. None of them should drive your decision, and you shouldn't pay a premium for them expecting them to matter. Spend on the six above.
A base that checks all six
Our adjustable bases are built around exactly this list: independent head-and-foot adjustment, solid weight ratings, quiet motors (with memory presets on the OS5 and Rise 600), mattress bundles so compatibility is guaranteed, a 90-night trial and 10-year warranty — and factory-direct pricing so you're not paying for a showroom.
